Golf Business

Client: Golf Business Magazine
Editor: Ronnie Musselwhite
Graphic Designer: Dave Alexander

Golf Business has been a client for many years. Ronnie Musselwhite asked me to photograph Todd Miller and Victor Grubb. Both men are head golf professionals. Since their courses are relatively close together, I scheduled both shoots for the same day.

The weather did not cooperate for an outside shoot with either subject. For the following shots of Mr. Miller, we were inside a villa located on the property.

For this image, I positioned a 22" silver beauty dish with 15 degree grid on camera right to light Mr. Miller's face. A medium Chimera over the camera provided a slight fill. On camera left and slightly behind the subject, I placed a small Chimera strip. Finally, I boomed a head with a 30 degree grid over the set to light the painting on the wall. The camera was a Canon 5dII with a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

The second image is very simple. I positioned Mr. Miller just a couple feet away from a plain wall, then boomed a medium Chimera over him, just out of view. I used a Canon 7D and a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens.

When I arrived for the shoot with Victor Grubb, it was still raining so we ended up shooting in a meeting area in the club house.

For the main, I used a large Chimera on camera right with a 22" white beauty dish with 30 degree grid boomed over the camera for fill. Two small Chimeras provided separation lights on either side of Mr. Grubb. Finally I positioned a head with a 40 degree grid and red filter to light the gray wall in the background. I used a Canon 5dII and a 24-70 f/2.8 lens.

To give the Ronnie and Dave another choice, I also produced this image. Mr. Grubb is sitting at a table in front of a sliding glass door. I was able to use the soft, diffused light coming through the glass to light Mr. Grubb. A small silver card provided fill. Even though I was shooting at 1/60 at f/3.2 with a Canon 5dII and a 50mm f/1.4 lens, I still needed an ISO of 1000 to make the shot happen. Although I love my film, you can't beat digital's ability to perform at high ISO's.

MFG

Client: MFG - Made From Grass
Creative Directors: Nancy Aust Strickland, Patrick Johnson

These photographs were produced for the launch of the MFG website - www.madefromgrass.com . MFG is a movement that engages people to be a part of a sustainable culture based on bamboo grass.

We had a mostly overcast day so I only needed a little fill flash for most images. I used a medium Chimera along with a Canon 5dII, 24-70mm f/2.8, and 70-200mm f/2.8.

Here is a sampling of the images:

Chad Weatherford

I had the opportunity to work with Chad Weatherford, the 2010 winner of the Field & Stream Total Outdoorsman Challenge. The day was very cold and overcast. Some of the images were shot with available light. Others were produced with the help of large and medium Chimeras. I used a Canon 5dII with a 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, and a 50mm f/1.4.

Here is the art director's select:

Here are a few others I like as well:

State Tech Magazine

Client: TMG, State Tech Magazine
Photo Editor: Sara Elder
Subject: Robert Franks, Certified Government CIO

Sara requested an environmental portrait of Robert Franks. It was such a nice day we decided to shoot everything outside. Here is Sara's select for the magazine:

This is an available light image, created in the shade of a large building. I liked the tree on camera left and the leaves in the foreground.

Here are two other options I gave to TMG:

I used a large Chimera on camera left as the main and a medium Chimera over the camera as fill.

Another available light shot ... open shade. Shot with a Canon 5D II and a 50mm f/1.4 set at f/3.5.

Notre Dame Magazine

Client: Notre Dame Magazine
Art Director: Kerry Prugh
Subject: Arthur McFarland

The assignment was to create an environmental portrait of Judge Arthur McFarland for Notre Dame Magazine. I decided to photograph Mr. McFarland at his office, as well as outside his church. Art director Kerry Prugh selected one of the shots with the church in the background.

Technically, this shot was pretty simple ... it's just available light. I shot it with a Canon 5D II and a 50mm f/1.4 lens set at f/2.5. Some days, you just have good light.

Here are a few others from the shoot:

For this image, I used a small Chimera on camera left and a small Chimera strip boomed over the camera. There was an additional head on the books in the background.

Another available light shot. Canon 50mm f/1.4 set at f/1.4 on the 5D II.

And what shoot would be complete without running a couple rolls through a Hasselblad. I used a Hasselblad 503 with motor drive, 150mm with extension tube, and Ektar 120 film. The main light was a 22" beauty dish with grid. I used small Matthews flags to control the light from the beauty dish. Fill light came from a small Chimera strip over the camera.

SC Electric Cooperatives

These images were shot for the electric cooperatives of SC. They feature co-op CEO's and attorneys.

For this shot, I used a large Chimera on camera left and a medium Chimera above the camera. I also needed a 12' x 12' overhead frame with artificial silk to help control the harsh afternoon sun.

Citizens Bank

Client: The Citizens Bank
Director of Marketing: Margi Fleming
Art Director: Jeff Smith

Over the last few months, I have been shooting a series of ads for The Citizens Bank. The photographs are primarily used for billboard advertising. The images feature business owners who are bank customers.

This ad features Harold Johnson who owns a nursery. When we arrived for the shoot, I noticed there were some chickens nearby. I thought, "Wouldn't it be great if he were holding a rooster!" Mr. Johnson obliged. Of course, to be on the safer side, I shot with and without the fowl. In the end, the bank liked the chicken. Here is the final billboard:

The images were shot with a Canon 5D II and a 50mm 1.4 lens. Lighting on the subject came from one large Chimera on camera left and one medium Chimera over the camera. We also used a 12' x 12' overhead frame with artificial silk to control the sun.

Dr. Lesley Kirby is an audiologist. This image was shot in my studio on gray seamless paper. The main light was a large Chimera, with a medium Chimera over the camera for fill. There was also one flash on the background to keep it from going too dark. It was shot with a Canon 5D II with a 70-200 f/2.8 lens.

Here is the final for the billboard:
